Hi everyone. As you can probably gather from my user name, I keep chickens. at the moment I have 8 of them.
So originally I brought 6 in may 2012. In summer 2013, we lost 4 of them in quick succession, probably from becoming egg-bound. So we brought another 3. in the winter of 2013/14, sadly one of them also died. By now we were only getting eggs from the new ones, with the old two stopping laying for the most part in October/November 2013. We decided to buy another 4 chickens so that we were able to sell eggs again, but the two little chickens didn't get on with them. In my posts I will refer to the original two chickens the old ones or the big ones, the second pair of chickens the little ones or the black ones, and the 4 will be known as the new ones.
So anyway, a few weeks ago one of the little ones hurt it's leg slightly. Because of this, one of the big ones attacked it, so we had to get the little one out and get another rabbit hutch to put her in. the big ones & the little ones lived in one pen, whilst the new ones live in the other half of the pen, with a temporary fence between the two. but now the little one who was attacked lives with the new ones because she gets on better with them after the attack.
So that is a very brief history of what has happened with my chickens so far, and if you are unsure of anything please ask and I'll do my best to try to explain it. I'll also post photos later or tomorrow, when I get a chance.

Yeas Dermy, it is a rooster. And the estate rules state that I am not aloud to keep a rooster Messor. They can be a pain anyway, and can actually do more harm than good.

Yes Wood, 6 of them lay, and we get around 5 per day. Do you eat most of them, or do you end up giving them away? There's two groups of chickens at my college (Each with their own rooster) and they produce loads of eggs. The snakes like them!

We eat some of the eggs Timenova, But the rest we sell. And yes I agree it would be cool to have one Messor, but it wouldn't be practical.

Some areas the council won't let you keep a cockerel. A few years back a neighbour behind us had one, I liked to hear it in the mornings but there was a lot of complaints and the council made them get rid of it. They were using their small garden like a small holding, they even had a goat. In the end they moved to the country and bought a bit of land.

I have 6 chickens. Originally as 10 but one died egg bound, one turned out to be a rooster so we had to sell him and two died of old age. Which is funny because we have one 6 year old chicken
