I have seen photos of the last unidentified ant, but cannot remember what genus it belongs to, so I have asked some of my more expert friends to see if they can help to identify it.

From what I know this ant should have mating flights around January/February time, or what will be late summer for you in South Africa.

Might be that time also. If I break of a branch of the tree they reside in...what's the chance of me getting a queen...without destroying or killing them

Might be that time also. If I break of a branch of the tree they reside in...what's the chance of me getting a queen...without destroying or killing them You would need to look for small entrance holes which insects have made. Some of these might contain newly mated queen ants which could be removed if you do it carefully. Ant hunting can be a case of delicate probing and patience, as digging into ant nests like a bull in a china shop is frowned upon. Some ant collectors do not seem to grasp why we advocate NOT destroying ant nests, or the mass digging up of nests unless they are under threat. We have been called all sorts of names about this issue, as the name cretins did arise from one ex-member who disagreed with our doctrine; but we know there are some idiots out there who only collect ants for projects and may not be serious about the hobby, and these people are unable to grasp why they get banned from this forum, despite being of high intelligence.

I feel that's a great way of going about doing things. I don't agree with those killing ants when they over populate in the nest or when looking for them or for any other reason. I feel if your not truly an animal lover you shouldn't have any pets at all. Of any kind. Back to the topic...I will definately be careful when looking for a queen. Thanx bud

I've found 2 other ant species as well. One is not in my yard but close by. One of them are a jumping ant...I always thought they were spiders because they would randomly appear in the car or somewhere and when I try to touch them they disappear...well today I found one wondering alone...and I photographed it...its tiny and I'm not a pro so the photos looks not that great. While I was playing with it on my floor (like a child) it jumped and it jumped into my hand...I couldn't believe with what force these things jumped. Its incredible. I could clearly feel it bumping into my hand. Anyway...will post soon
