Can anyone advise me on the best way to secure test tubes to the floor of a plastic food container which I am planning to start my colonies in? Test tubes will have to be periodically removed to replenish the water supply and then re-inserted easily. I was thinking blue tack but am concerned that perhaps the chemicals in it would be harmful to the ants and their precious larvae?
The reason why is I just don't want them to roll around when I have to pick up the container.

Blue tac is fine, but you could make a nest of bubblewrap, tissue and push it between the tubes. Polystyrene and egg boxes adapted can also be used to wedge them.

Personally I use wet cotton balls to give the ants more chance to drink water and they lodge the test tubes in place.

Buy a cheap bath or car sponge in a pound shop, cut it into long strips and insert between each test tube. They do not roll about if you fit the bits of sponge tight enough. Oh, and place a strip of sponge along both sides of the container (these can be glued in place if you wish to use the box a lot).
