I used to have a DWA licence to keep venomous snakes, specializing in pit vipers and true vipers. I kept various species over 6 years, my interest having being sparked by discovering a population of Adders close to where I live, but had to give it up when I moved house and didn't have the option of having a separate room to keep them in. For the most part vipers remain still as they are sit and wait predators and not active predators like their Elapid cousins (Mambas, Cobras, Coral Snakes, Australian Taipans/Brown Snakes ect) but that's what I liked most about them. They were fat and happy in captivity and stunningly beautiful to look at. I think about them sometimes and miss keeping them terribly
The West African Gaboon Viper, my favourite species. This female was an absolute cracker, about 3' long.

I shall expand on this thread over time. This is the male Western Diamond Back Rattlesnake that I had. It was captive bred and was 8 weeks old when I got him. After 8 years he was roughly 3' long, heavily built and devouring large rats.

I don't keep them anymore but yes I got careless with my Desert horned Viper once and she nailed me! It was painful but I didn't need anti-venom as the venom of this species is reportedly quite weak. That being said, I heard an account of someone being bitten by this species and after a year the wound still hadn't healed properly. Viper venom is nasty stuff.
