What's the main difference between Atta and Acromyrmex? Acromyrmex make colonies of 300,000 to half a million at best. Atta are a slightly larger ant which have colonies of up to 2 or 3 million, but both are Leaf Cutter Ants mostly found in South America and the West Indies. Apologies to Deansie for this, as these posts can be moved if you feel we have hijacked your journal.

Just wondering how big of a set up I would need for a leafcutting colony. Also wondered if they are an easyish species to keep as I would like a colony in the future.

I hate to have to post this, but from personal experience I know they're not. I had 1 colony and they died (my own stupid mistakes) very quickly. Colony 2 never, however after just a couple of days with the wrong humidity and temperature they had hardly any fungus, and that was Acromyrmex! I wish you luck, but don't jump in like I did

Just been looking at prices and they are definitely not cheap . I might have to ditch this plan and try an easier, cheaper species of ant. If I get it wrong then it may be quite devastating . After the loss of my Myrmica rubra colony, I wouldn't be able to bare the loss of another colony.

Setups cost even more if you want to get it right!

For a a of colony you could get away with a large aquarium and just control the numbers when they get to numerous. Non of us have the ability to let them get to there potential. Costly to buy but cheap to maintain once going and fairly easy to look after if the fungus gardens needs are catered for. You can always revisit them in the future
