Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I had it in my head that Formica rufa was a protected species anyway? And at least it say's that it's only a limited edition, so hopefully it should not become an everyday product, especially at that price.

Sadly wood ants are not a protected species as such, but forest rangers should be made to stop this sort of thing as this could cause harm, not just to ant populations, but also to the forests where wood ants control a lot of pests and harmful insects which damage trees and other flora and fauna. I have tasted formic acid sprayed by Formica rufa onto my fingers, and the taste is very acrid and bitter. The Gin company could use other chemicals to get this taste rather than put ants in their product.

I have to say I am not surprised buy the company at all I blame ignorance as many people will think they are just ants and there are millions of them so what the heck As wood points out they have a vital role in the ecosystem so mass killing them will harm the forest. In many ways the disaster with honey bees is helping people to understand that without insects we do not have a future. I just hope that ants start to get the protection we are panicking and trying to give the bees
