Well that was easier than expected. I made up a new tube and just put them together and almost straight away she picked up all eggs and went straight into new tube. The only bad news is she seems to have a strand of cotton around her somewhere which is rapped around the nanitic too so every where she walks in the test tube its getting dragged with her. Will this be bad or will she sort it out eventually.

It's kinda nice reading this thread I've also got a messor queen recently she's still in her test tube with just 3 workers I wish you luck with yours so did she not move out when you offered her soil? Maybe if she does venture out into the soil it could rid her of this cotton wool she has stuck on her

No she ventured out in the out world when I first got her and then went back into the tube, then wood ant suggested soil which I also tried and she was just content with ripping hell out of the cotton wool lol. I`m hoping the first worker if it does survive will help her chill out a little then maybe I can unblock the end and let it roam about a little.

The strand of cotton may be caught in the hairs on your queen's legs. If she cannot, or will not pull it off, then you need to gently hold her and tease it off using a pair of tweezers. This is one reason I prefer not keeping ants in a test tube with cotton wool for very long, as you don't get this in a soil set up.

Hello every one, I checked tonight and the little white almost worker has disappeared so I presume it will have been eaten. I've put the small pot of soil back in tonight and she seemed half tempted into the hole I have made almost straight away. She went in for a little look, came out and went straight to the cotton wool and started pulling again. I think I am going to try leaving the tube in light and see what happens over the next few days.
Also she has lost the strand of cotton wool which I was getting worried about so that`s all good.

The gathering of soil inside the test tube gives me the impression she wants to dig a nest.

When I came home she was in the tube completely blocked in and the cotton wool was sealed to and within minutes she went into the pot and barricaded herself in.I think she has taken some eggs but left 2 behind in the tube so I guess it will be a waiting game now to see if she survives. What do you think is the longest I should leave it or expect to see some thing happen? How can I tell if she is still alive basically as I don`t want to spend my time looking at a pot with soil in it.

You need to be careful, make sure you can still see her. Don't worry about the cotton now as long as there is moist soil water source. just leave her now don't fiddle. keep her dark and warm and leave to her instincts.

She has gone into the pot of soil now and sealed herself in so I can't see her. I'll leave it a good 3 months and see what happens. I`ve noticed the last 2 eggs that she left in the tube have gone now so I presume she has picked them up or eaten them.

I`ve noticed the last 2 eggs that she left in the tube have gone now so I presume she has picked them up or eaten them. She is more likely to have collected them rather than eaten them, as this brood is her future workers which will ensure the survival of both her and the colony.

Well the last 2 nights I've had one small worker running around and trying to pick some seeds up.The poor little thing struggles with the Niger seeds I have put in so I have put in some dandelion seeds and she seems to be able to just carry these. The odd thing is she come out of the top of the pot rather than where the queen entered lower down at ground level, so she carry's the seeds up the glass and dangles across and goes down then.I have made a paper ramp but she just ignores that and goes the hard way all the time.
