Log: 22.08.2014 =========== I don't know if I'll update this colony as much as some of others, but will see how they go as I'm still mixed a little with what I'm goin to house them in as I have a image of having them in a smallish crystal clear plastic box of some kind to watch them in with pin holes at top. I got the 2 queens from some kind friends Woody and Jen the owners of this site so thinking of putting them in a place I'll always see the colony as there small world grows but hope not as big as the messor colony has . There in a test tube as of now: Both of the queens seem very healthy and have lots of brood that will be ready any time soon to hatch out of there small cocoons. ============================ ============================

cannot wait to see how they do because I am planning on getting some flavusflavus from Wood and Jen soon. Think they will bloom in to a nice micro colony reason why I may have them in a small tank set up
For some reason to you cannot find any flavus around here or moors where I live, They like died out cos of other ant colony specie talking over.

There going to have a nice population boom soon. Are you going to be hibernating them this year or are you going to leave it to next year so they have more workers.

I'll try and hibernate them in shed but I think what ever I'll have colony in could fall or something as well family's always in and out looking for stuff in there
So I may keep them in my room in the coolest place under a small desk near my room door.
Also don't want to go off subjected but spiders this year are really big I keep seeing all over.

I have hardly seen any spiders this year and the ones I have seen are tiny.

Lasius flavus are now a small colony
Theres around 7 small workers maybe more hidden in cotton or under queens and seem ready to advancer out of tube some of them,
I'm going to set them in a like foraging tank like set up always dark, So I'm going to keep them covered up on desk so its dark and see how they go.

Seems the Lasius flavus colony are active today well I feed them a bit of cooked carat as some was rooting around looking for food.
This colony don't seem to mind light and colony slowly grows and the 2 queens seem well, And not as fat as they use to be so with food they will soon fatten up again.
Put abit of maple syrup in foraging tank and it dint take long for a worker to find it and there fast for small workers.

This colony some of workers was scouting out for food this morning, So I gave them a little syrup on a damp cotton bud.
As you can see with this pitcher, There feed in 2 and 3's one another sharing the syrup gergatating a drop each to make a larger drop to feed other either 1 or 2's with or more.
The one was passing on feed to others. and the 2 queens seem fine and a lot of eggs there have.
Queens and larvae's and odd cocoons.
A dead worker on left and it seems they not moving there dead unlike other ants do. I do wonder if Lasius flavus eat there own dead, Will see if there dump there dead some where in foraging tank after so long or they just leave them in nest or eat there own dead.
============================================== ============================================== I'll upload a video later of queen been feed by 3 workers at a time, not just one.

The Lasius flavus are a interesting ant colony to keep, and the colour of there gasters on the workers, Well you are what you eat to these ants as if there eat something dark then so does the colour of there gasters.
The small ant workers for this colony just live just over 3 weeks with inspection. If you wondering how I can tell some ant workers apart, I look for any odd formalities like any dints on head or gaster or arms missing ect when they born, Theres always the odd ones.
The numbers go up and down but more up as when 1 dies you can say another 3 take its place in this colony but it seems colony are always very active even on cold days all hugging together.
Colony also remind me of grazers, they will drink juicers from anything they walk on, Even there own dead. ================== ==================
