If I had been treated so badly like this when I ordered my ant farm from anstore I would have definitely contacted them by now.

Sorry everybody that I have not posted for a day, yesterday on Wednesday I finally received my colony of Acromyrmex octospinosus, they came well packaged even though I had been waiting OVER A MONTH. I opened the package to find that they were in a medium sized see - through tub with wet tissue inside. there are around 200 workers (of all castes) + 1 healthy queen ;D, it was a struggle to knock all of the colony + the fungus off the wet tissue and onto the peat + compost mixture. I left them for a couple of hours then I came back to find that the colony was on the move, the queen, workers and fungus were being taken to a new nesting site which is underneath the base of the bamboo root !!! , this is fine though as they have settled in nicely. I left them over night therefore I placed about 20 privet leaves on their stems next to the new nesting site, I came back in the morning to find holes carved out of the leaves + a soldier carrying a piece of leaf back to the nest , my father has a friend who works with Atta species in the local zoo, he explained to me that the fungus gives off a pheromone which tells the ants not to collect the same type of leaf every day, therefore you have to give them a variety of leaves to choose from. he explained that they even eat the peel of an orange and used tea bags , anyway I am glad l have been told this, they seem to be doing great ;D

Today, along with a few privets, strawberry leaves, and nettles, I also placed a piece of apple which they devoured. The minors drank the juice from the apple whilst the larger castes chewed pieces of apple off and carried them down into the nest to their small fungus garden ... pictures coming soon

sadly, due to my lack of experiece, after a few months this colony sadly died out but I have learnt from my stupid mistakes, I will leave it a few years until I have the experience with tropical species
