As long as the muck up you dint do a "arrow roulette" with bow in semi-final ;D pardon? sorry that might make sense at a more reasonable time lol I think most of the videos that say things along them lines are normally referring to Atta, as there colony's are often a few million strong, rather than a few hundred thousand, which is still a lot ;D Come to think about it, I don't think I've ever tried grass, weeds that you get in the grass yes, but never grass , thats changed todays menu, I kind of hope they do like it as that would make winter a lot easier Oh would I so like to let them has a go at my next doors plants, she'd have a fit ;D (where's an evil smily when you need one lol) Kyle

No thats ok, I thought I had a comments thread already oh well. Lol I do, I have a 60Lbs Crusader compound, I just got kinda cocky, did something stupid and mucked up in the semi-final, bit I'll still blame the bow it's about 8 years old lol , I'd love to get a English longbow/warbow they just look lovely and are powerful, but you only fire what you draw with them. Thank you, that can vary from day to day, but they never eat more than about 35cm2 (in one day) but I try and get about 10-30 cm2 (if you can kinda imagine it all laid out flat and depending how much they had the day before), the hardest bit is trying to get something different every day, the reason I do that is if for some reason or another I can't get what I was planning on, I can just skip to the next days food (I have a cycle of what they get on each day makes things easier). During winter tho it becomes harder, more so this year as its grow considerably since last winter, but they love oatmeal (organic) so thats an easy option. Kyle

Ok sorry I've not updated this in about 3 months, I've been rather busy with bits and bobs, and a local archery tournament ;D ;D which I didn't win came 4th (need new bow) any way yabbering 27.9.2010I can more or less clean out the nesting tank now, as they have moved into the foraging area temporarily, leaving the old tank empty of fungus, just a few stragglers left to move. As far as feeding goes, they have become much less picky, weather that has anything to do with the fact that food is put no more than 20CM away or not I don't know, but almost everything that is put in is very quickly dragged over to the fungus (with out being cut if they can help it) and start processing it straight away. A way to be sure that the food does not have mites on it it to put it in boiling water, might be a bit extreme but it a way to be sure You said they are in a Messor nest right?, you could try attaching a test tube, (or other tempoary nest depending on the size of the nest) then slowly make the nest wetter and wetter, till the Messor get fed up and move out, hopefully leaving the mites behind, as normally mites prefer warm humid places as Wood says, then once the ants are out remove the plastic/glass then put boiling water over the brick, which is all easier said than done hope you can sort it out ASAP as mites truly are a pain Kyle

I know the thread has not been posted in for over a year, but ì saw no reason to open a new one. One thing the really annoys me, is how much car insurance costs for new drivers, its no wonder so many young drivers are uninsured, I past my test in March (whoo) and the cheapest I could find (and still find) was about £4000 give or take a bit, and for a laugh ì looked at the highest which was £12000 Also another thing (altho it don't hugely make much difference) is my local archery club, I've always used a 2 finger reverse Mediterranean draw, which they claimed to be unsafe so had to use the normal 3 finger Mediterranean draw, not much difference just not what I'm used to. so what annoys you?

I must admit this game is really quite additive even tho it's so simple to other games I've played, tho it does take ages to do anything, which makes it annoying when your @#&$*?^% of a brother decides to do a stupid attack on someone then you lose.(sorry rant over)

If its a native specie then it won't do any harm letting them go, but if they are not a native specie then don't, but you could use the alates as food for other nests

One thing I would advise, would be to put something like a test tube filled with plain water, or something along them lines, as even if they don't need it, its better to be safe than sorry

After last months cave in, things are now back on track. The last few week they have become quite picky in what they've been taking back to the nest, even rose leaves were left the other day, so I decided to try giving them some fruit as I hadn't do so in quite a while to see if I got a better response, Within just a few minutes of putting an Orange in, there were workers pouring out of the nest Within about half hour bits of orange were clearly visible I've also been told that "fruit is not for the insects up there, its meant for us" lol, but where theres a will theres a way They've also decided to build/take some fungus back into the tubing again, which I still can't work out why and me brother getting bitten lol, but he offered so...

They truly are everwhere at the mo here in NW of Kent, not so much the queens any more still the odd 1 or 2 now and then but the males are going mad ;D mind you they do start to get annoying when they are all landing on your screen and buttons you're typing (out in the garden on a laptop, if you were wondering how lol), still awaiting the Myrmica to to send out there alates yet tho, thats the main aim this year, apart from a few Lasius niger queens for a few mates who are finding it very amusing

If you keep the tubs quite light, and unhomely they should not start to lay eggs, so you could transfere them into the test tubes with little problem, as for them being air tight you could try heating up a needle and punching some small holes into the lid, or just till the tubes arrive if you don't want to do that you could just open the lid slightly for a few mins a day As long as they feel safe they can more or less be kept in anything, as Mikey shows you can even keep them in a small Ytong style nest (It not Ytong he uses but similar idea), but as you say water can be a bit of a problem in some set-ups, depending on what you go for you could try putting a small test tube or other small vessal (I use these www.ants-kalytta.com/Reaction-vessel.html) Good to see you enjoyed your first nuptial fight, we had one up here(down here (depending where you are lol)) in the NW of Kent, Lasius niger only so far tho, so still waiting for the Myrmica's which should not be long now ,

As long as there are a few workers tending to the fungus then it should be ok, but as for the queen looking for a new nest site, I'm not sure, but I'm sorry to say but that's not normally a good thing, was she alone or with workers?
Have you tried giving them rose leaf or petal, as they can be a bit picky in the beginning.
If there is such little fungus left, then it wouldn't be a bad idea, cause even if they do recover before it arrives they can still use it.
hope this helps

mine didn't start cutting till about 2-3 days I think, and even then it was very little to start with. The light coloured workers could just be younger workers, and the darker ones older, as if I ever empty the rubbish the only dead ones (I guess of old age) are only ever the darker ones hope they do well for you
