ah, Seems this post may be a tad late, but I was going to say (cause if they're not all dead this might still work) try putting a nest near by for them to move into, as I'm sure most ants prefere soil over concrete, so just something like a Ferrero Rocher box with moist soil in, but altho it may take 'em a few days to move but you'll have 2 birds one stone, got your own Formica colonie and removed it from your wall.

I remember seeing something like this once when I was younger (7-10), it was down Cornwall way I belive, but I remember it being a rather deep red in colour almost rolling accros the sky (altho I had no idea what it was at the time). So too be able to see something like that again would be brill but living in the SouthEast I doubt I will.

Yer, I aggre with Wood, but the fact that your colony is producing alates is normally a good sign, that your colony is happy, growing well, and very well fed . so very well done Kyle

Just a quick update, as I've been very busy lately, what with grandad going into hospital, cars going wrong, and the job center [sarcasm]what joy they are[/sarcasm], but anyway.... 19.01.2011I've changed the set-up a little to make keeping the humidity higher easier, so instead of having a mesh lid, I now have a full glass lid, and thus the amount of soil needed is now much less, so I'm now using one of these (have I said that already?) which hold the moisture very well, and is very light so no risk of a cave in . Over the last few months they have becomes picky little blighters, and have even turned down bramble a few times, but still love fruit so it's not like there not taking any food at all. Kyle

First off a slightly late happy birthday hope you had a good'n, you better not have jinxed yourself by saying that. The poor old GR series coming to an end , but she's served our boys and girls well over the years from the Falklands in the 70's to Afghanistan today, be a great shame to see her go. Kyle

Another quick update, but I'm still on the laptop, so yar
27.11.2010
In the last week or so they seem to have become very picky on what they are taking back to the nest, altho bramble is taken in larger amounts as well as the oatmeal, which is always a great sign, and as always honey water goes down a treat.
The only slight problem with the "lighter" soil is that when it's heated to loses moisture a lot quicker than the old soil, as as its only a mesh lid the humidity just escapes, so just need to either get a few bits of glass or plastic or anything that will help keep the moisture in, or get a few heat mats and change the lid to a good fitting full glass lid.

I know I've not updated this in a while, but certain things took priority, and I still can't use the PC anyway by the way everyone have a good bonfire night 07.11.2010I've was finally able to get a new soil to replace the heavy stuff, which also holds moisture much better (humus brick), they've not been eating as much in the last week or so, as they've been moving, and re digging the nest etc etc, but all seem well, as they are slowly returning to normal. Believe I read somewhere once it's cause to collect them they travel to where they are mating (in this case Aussie) and the import and export licenses (there was a thread awhile back about export/import licenses) needed to get them out and into Europe, and it might put a novice off of going straight into non-European species (that last bits just my opinion).

OUCH!!
Yes, the old nest tank was kept at a constant 26oc via heat lap and thermostat, where as the tank they're in now, is kept around 24-28oc (depending on weather or if the heatings on etc) via a 12 watt heat mat with polystyrene to stop over heating, humidity is kept up by lightly spraying when needed.

Well I might try Wheat grass, as I can buy that cheaply up Sainsbury (seeds) if not the Messor can have the seeds. Never would have thought someone could get cut on a blade of grass, I'd imagine it would feel somewhat like a paper cut Kyle
