OK, quick and long over due update.
The colony is still doing well, although it does seem to have shrunk in size while I've been gone to almost 2/3 of it's size, but both queens are still alive from the looks of things and the general health of the colony seems to be good, so now its a matter of trying to get the colony back to where it was, and seeing as a rose that was put in about 10 minutes ago is already covered in workers it shouldn't be hard, but they as I know they can be fussy eaters so only time will tell.

I've been kind of lucky really, as it was my dad that got me into them in the first place (aged 8), and it just progressed from a small ant-world with Lasius niger, to what it is now over the years, although I do from time to time get moaned at either by the dad or GF (who can be worse than my Mother ) if they ever get out. Mind you when I said I was getting cockroaches he did object abit, but same goes with everything else, "as long as it don't get out it can stay indoors". Kyle

Lol being a college student (well sort of, not actually doing their course, just using the building), most of that does seem true, and most students there seem to do 1000 till 1500 with a hours lunch break in there (as well as siggy breaks), and still have plenty of time to just lay around sun bathing (not that I'm complaining ;D), what makes me laugh tho, is this week the college students have it off and I belive they still get EMA and a bonus, where as we have to still go in (0900-1630) wearing bright orange PPE (the orange uniform you see guys on the railway wearing), when we get it (should be this week), but I'm not really sure where I'm going with this . I dread to think what the retirement age will be by the time I get near to thinking about that , then again it's not the destination that matters its how you get there, but I'd still like a nice cold drink waiting for me when I arrive . And there's the culprit (right side of hole) in full view, caught in the act ;D lol I didn't actually see her... makes me wonder where she is now Indeed there strength mixed with pure persistence, and they get almost anything done in due time. Oh yes, I don't think a day goes past (apart from when I haven't taken the lid off) that I don't end up turning around to see one of them staring at me, or walking over my hand on the computer mouse , but all the time they don't escape in mass I don't mind too much Kyle

Just got back from the Pictures and what did I find... the cheeky little blighters have chewed through the tubing, but on the bright side they are now wondering around the cupboard cleaning up anything that might be edable , and now I think about it maybe I should have prioritised blocking the hole first rather than posting it on here lol. Hmm, hard one for me, but I'd have to say Aliens (altho the chest burster in Alien was good(more so for its day)), just the scenes towards the ends with the xenomorph queen, it was just something that I'd never seen before so must have stuck in my mind, and with the graphics, lighting etc, even now I can still happliy watch that film many times over. ;D ;D

You observe something new almost everyday, whether its a behaviour that you've not seen before, or just your ants deciding that they want something different for a change. Glad you're enjoying it and hope you contiune to Kyle

The colony is really starting to kick up a notch lately and what with spring more or less here, I can expect things shot up. But first things first, to clean the foraging tank, I normally clean it once a month (although I do clean any old leaves and twigs before then), which is never an easy task what with lots of angry ants running around trying to bite you I was lucky here Even one of the cats decided to have a look, thankfully none of them have ever been bitten. The Fungus is really growing nicely and with the slightly changed set-up humidity is kept higher without the need for me to keep opening and spraying water. I also finially got round to testing honeywater vs sugarwater sugar on the left, honey on the right, 2 mins after putting it in. After about 25 mins but the next day all the honeywater had gone, leaving only the sugar water behind. Kyle

General rule I use, is once the daffs come out so do my ants, but that can be quite early down here in the south,(and even earlier further south).

If that were the case I'd expect Antskalytta to have about the same price, as I've ordered from both and they both come in 4 days (excl weekends), so it really is a puzzle to me Kyle

I think some people do it as to stop unwanted things likes mites or mould that in the "wild" would stay under control as they are effected by lots of variables, whereas in a set-up they can spread, and without something to counter it, they can overwhelm the set-up, or thats why I do it with soil from outside. Hope this helps
