I've had my Acromyrmex octospinosus since January 2009, and after a bit of a bumpy beginning and a few other problems, they are now well and truly thriving with well over 5000 worker and still growing quickly.

On a serious note though (and having to sit through a 2 hour safety briefing), this just shows how powerful railway detonators (Fog signals) can be, mishandling these can easily result in lose of finger and hands add to that the shrapnel that comes flying off of these and eyesight can be lost and hearing can be damaged due to the loud bang, so please if anyone ever finds these, don't try setting them off, either call the police or if they are in they their tube or box and it is safe to do so take them to either a police station, train station or even a Network rail yard. Do not play with them! For peace of mind, the video was taken in a safe location with the only risk to any nearby trees, and as you can see, some of them have been hit multiply times yet have not gone off, which goes to show how solid these things are, remember I have been working with these for years, and am fully qualified to destroy them in the proper manner (which this is not). Stay safe. Kyle

Oh my, I never thought that would happen, as when his son has said "he's away collecting ants" I never would have thought he'd be doing so illegally. As Wood says, I can certainly see this hitting his exotic sales for awhile, just hope he learns and doesn't do so again .

Oh yes, I did, was meant to be at work and on site by 0500, I didn't get there till 0600 . The cold winter nights are certainly on there way, more so just before sun rise, when you really start to feel the chill.

As they say, if it's free, use it and abuse it Shame they don't give free rail passes like they use to as well.

It depends, normally you stand a better chance if they die within the first week, other wise more blame can be put down to the owner and how he/she is keeping them, but maybe if you start reporting it right away that an oddly large number of them are dying off when they first arrive, you should stand a better chance.
I know from experience that AntsKalytta is very helpful when it comes to replacements, and will normally send a new colony out ASAP, so I'd say try and contest it if you believe that it couldn't have been avoided, other wise it may be a lot harder.
